My name is Neal Arkley, and I’m a photographer, based in Newark, Nottinghamshire. I primarily specialise in commercial, portrait and landscape photography.

I love creating, and photography has allowed me to fulfil that passion. Ever since taking an interest in photography in my early 20’s, I thrive on capturing moments that spark a reaction beyond “that’s a nice photo”, and lead people to take an interest in the details.

I started taking photographs with my friends when we used to go dirt jumping. I enjoyed capturing candid moments; friends enjoying each other’s company. From there, I developed my interest in photography with better camera equipment and building my knowledge through my local college. It was here where I became fascinated with the process of working with 35mm film. From carefully exposing the film, developing the strip, to going into the darkroom and creating a print, I was captivated with using film.

My photography now consists of digital and film, allowing me to explore various styles, and techniques and expand my skills as a photographer.

I consider my style to be “dark and moody”. Capturing scenery isn’t just taking a photograph, it’s how the light or the weather affects that scene, and how it creates a certain mood. In addition to this, I love developing photos that have a cyberpunk aesthetic, putting an emphasis on neon colours to a night time city landscape or portrait.

Over the years, my photography has become diverse and versatile. However, I still have the same aim with every photograph I take - create a feeling. Whether that is pulling in someone’s interest with my landscape photos, or boosting someone’s confidence by taking their portrait, it is always about sparking emotion.

I have worked with several local businesses and brands, photographing for a variety of industries including food and catering, and retail. This has allowed me to embrace various techniques, with flat lay being a personal favourite.
